SOCIOCULTURAL PERCEPTIONS OF “BIG TUMMY” (OBESITY)

In Kenya, many people still see a big body and big tummy as a sign of health, respect, prosperity, and success (Jaynaide, 2021; Rahma et al., 2021). Yet medically, abdominal obesity (big tummy) is a disease and a sign of dangerous fat accumulation around the abdominal organs, also called visceral fat. This is not a mark of prosperity; it is a serious health warning.

When I lost 22 kg, many people told me that my previous body size attracted more “respect” than my current weight. Comments like these show how deeply our culture has normalized obesity. We must change the belief that a big tummy equals wealth or that it proves a woman has “taken good care” of her husband or vice vasa. That mindset is harming our health.

Abdominal obesity greatly increases the risk of Fatty liver Disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, autoimmune conditions, and many other lifestyle diseases. Managing weight is not just about appearance; it is a powerful tool for prevention and even reversal of many of these conditions.

For years, many methods have been tried for weight loss, but the ketogenic (keto) diet is consistently proving to be one of the most effective approaches. With keto, you eat delicious food, you eat to satiety (no strict portion control), and you still lose weight—without the excessive skin sagging often seen with rapid weight loss and above all no side effects.

At Keto Diet Champions & Wellness Centre, we do not offer “quick fixes.” Instead, we provide a sustainable, science-based solution that empowers you with knowledge about your own health so you can make lasting changes.
